It is the simple objective of bringing down the student-to-computer
ratio from an unmanageable 5:1 to the an ideal 1:1. Driven by this
mission, conditions are improving for the Computer I and II classes
at the Filipino Overseas Workers in Singapore (FOWS) Skills
Training Program
Under the auspices of the Philippine Embassy, the FOWS-STP runs
various courses including basic and advanced classes in spreadsheet
and word processing. Try to imagine 5 to 6 students huddled around
one computer, all trying to learn how to type, compose documents,
and work with spreadsheets. Cramped in close quarters with more
students than working computers, it used to be almost an impossible
situation.
The turning point was a sudden message from Greenview
Secondary School that it was willing to donate used computers.
This sparked a flurry of activities. Emails were fired back and
forth.

Less than 2 weeks later, volunteers had set up 14
Macintosh Performa 5400s (circa 1997) at the FOWS-STP Center
with 3 spare machines for parts.

Donations from Filipinos in Singapore poured in, totalling SGD$915.50.
This enabled the purchase of necessary peripherals such as hubs,
powerstrips, etc. Runtime
Revolution, a UK-based software company, donated a site
license worth US$260 for its touch-typing software, for up to 25
users. The Salvation
Army donated tables.
In the course of the project, we somehow tapped into a wellspring
of goodness and generosity. So many individuals and institutions
have in one way or another helped take this little project further
along the path to completion. As a means of ensuring total transparency
and accountability for what has been so freely given, this website
is dedicated to them.
